Worked in a team of researchers, video editors, and sound designers

Wrote more than 50 minutes of video script

The pandemic made everyone more creative. At least in the beginning. In those days, I got a call asking me to write video essay scripts for a YouTube channel. The project aimed to fill the void of explainer video content for the Turkish-speaking audience. As a longtime fan of YouTube channels like Vox, Kruzersagt, and alike, I jumped on the idea.

Context

It was a challenge for me to elevate playfulness in narration.

  • Video essay format requires more visual thinking.

  • The scripts must be concise, engaging, and wildly informative with various layers and angles.

Issues to deal with

We held regular brainstorming meetings before starting to pipeline the content. In a team of a video editor, two more researchers, a narrator, and a sound designer, we discussed different approaches to the topics at hand and carved out the story outlines. Then I gathered the research material and wrote down the scripts. Later I participated in the video-editing phase, too.

Creation

I created scripts for 5 videos with more than 50 minutes of explainer content. I learned a lot about YouTube broadcasting and gained a general understanding of video editing.

Result

  • The scripts had an overwhelming amount of information (general feedback).

  • The informal tone overshadowed the fun parts.
