Learned video editing and visual content management

A news website decided to use the YouTube video platform to enhance its reach among Turkish-speaking viewership. The senior editor team asked me to make video interviews and commentaries on their channel. Then, during the Coronavirus pandemic, they offered me to create daily content to inform their audience about global developments. Finally, the company wanted me to create a new channel with non-political content.

Context

  • YouTube rewards virality over anything else. Therefore the news content must be concise, super interesting, and responsibly accurate simultaneously.

  • With advanced video editing technologies becoming easily accessible, the overall quality of average YouTube content has increased. So the new deliveries must match the inflated expectations.

  • Algorithms limit users to certain types of content, so reaching out to new audiences has become difficult. But it also secures loyalty from viewers.

Issues to deal with

I produced four types of video content here.

1) Working with senior editors to brainstorm and plan weekly videos, I delivered dozens of video interviews and commentaries.

2) I closely followed the pandemic news coverage from the world and created dozens of daily informative videos from home.

3) I produced three weekly shows for the new channel with experts on history, medicine, and football.

4) I wrote scripts for videos that delve into the latest developments in technology. Then, I edited the raw footage and created fifteen engaging video presentations with the help of a narrator.

Production

I created scripts for 5 videos with more than 50 minutes of explainer content. I learned a lot about YouTube broadcasting and gained a general understanding of video editing.

Result

  • YouTube is not the best platform to deliver political news.

  • I should have worked more on the video quality. Sometimes, less is more.

  • The lack of engagement with the audience is a flaw in social media broadcasting.

  • YouTube rewards thematic broadcasting instead of various content in a single channel.

  • Viewership loyalty is the key to success on video platforms.
